Shreds are the fragments of a block that the leader sends out through Turbine while the slot is still in progress. We deliver them straight from validator infrastructure, before replay and before the data reaches standard RPC nodes and WebSocket subscriptions.
That gives you a lead of tens to hundreds of milliseconds, which in MEV often decides who takes the opportunity.
